Turkey launched a nationwide reading campaign targeting high school students in 2004, and another one aimed at primary school students in 2005 which is called the ‘100 Basic Literary Works’ reading campaign. Because of the importance of reading, children and adolescents are encouraged to read by their parents, teachers and sometimes by national reading campaigns as an educational policy. Reading improves the thinking ability by giving new concepts and ideas and enhances vocabulary and language which is essential in verbal communication. The ability of reading is an important part of teaching literacy and language acquisition. Often international data sources are consulted. At the national level, no efforts have been made on a single platform to evaluate the overall scientific and technological achievements of the multi-layered S&T system in India. A few studies, with specific purposes, have been undertaken at different points of time to evaluate the performance of institutions based on various S&T statistics, for example, in the context of restructuring scientific institutions, creating centralised facilities, cost cutting, and improving productivity. Further, studies of the impact of Indian science on society and national development are often based on sporadic, outdated, and scattered Indian reports. An important factor contributing to such images of S&T efforts in the country is the paucity of reliable data in an accessible and timely manner. Unfortunately, no systematic and comprehensive empirical assessment of S&T efforts is available in the Indian context, resulting in a relatively chaotic and contradictory picture of the national efforts in S&T. These country reports are an important component in reconstructing national S&T priorities and have played a large part in funding and monitoring S&T programmes in these countries.

Finally, teachers should also play a more significant role in motivating students to read as the findings yield that teachers are shown to have an impact on students' reading habits and attitudes.COUNTRIES WORLDWIDE MONITOR THE health of their scientific and technological activities through ‘national science reports’. Having a national survey on Malaysian students' reading habits is deemed necessary as it can document current trends (including the use of digital materials as a form of reading) and factors affecting students' reading habits and attitudes so that more fruitful actions to improve students' reading habits can be taken. Based on the findings, several recommendations were made to help improve students' reading habits and attitudes. Apart from that, digital materials are considered better compared to printed texts when it comes to the students' preference and its availability. The research findings through quantitative analysis revealed that the students had an overall positive attitude towards academic and leisure reading as they read academically and leisurely daily or at least once a week. The questionnaire investigated the students' reading habit, preferences, and attitudes towards reading. To collect the relevant data, a questionnaire was designed and distributed to 80 students. Hence, this paper is an attempt to understand the reading habits and attitudes of the students in the Faculty of Education in Universiti Teknologi Mara, Puncak Alam.

Those who read well have more chances in widening their mental horizons and better opportunities of success. Ability to read is crucial as reading affects intellectual and emotional growth of an individual.
